Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio are the same grape variety, but the differences in their names often reflect the different variations in which each of the regions grow their grapes and the winemaking techniques used.
Some differences that you should know.
The name “Pinot Gris” is used primarily in France, especially in the Alsace region. It’s also the term used for wines from the United States (including Washington State) and some other New World regions.
Pinot Grigio has been the term most commonly used in Italy and is associated with Italian white wines. Winemakers also use the technique Italian-style in different parts of the old world, mainly in Germany, and label the grape with the same name.
Style and Flavor Profile
Pinot Gris – In regions like Alsace, Oregon, and Washington State, Pinot Gris wines can range from dry to off-dry and a characteristic is a fuller body and richer, and creamier texture. They often exhibit flavors of ripe Bartlett pear which is harvested around the same time as Wa-ines, apple, and a touch of honey, with a delicate spice or floral notes. The wines can also drink a slightly oily or round mouthfeel.
Pinot Grigio – Italian Pinot Grigio is typically known for its crisp, light, and dry style. It tends to make the star of the show some fresh citrus flavors like lime and lemon, with a clean, refreshing finish. Italian Pinot Grigio is more straightforward and less complex compared to its Alsatian or American counterparts, you know what you are getting and they don’t try to do anything extra with the wine.
Do not get confused, USA and Washington do make Pinot grigio, so they use the grape with the Italian more simple version, but their forte in the PNW is the Gris style , countries such as Australia and Austria, also produce Pinot Grigio in a style similar to the Italian model.
Winemaking Techniques:
Pinot Gris – Winemakers use techniques like aging on lees or partial barrel fermentation to add complexity and body.
Pinot Grigio – The focus is often on preserving freshness and crispness, so winemaking techniques might emphasize stainless steel fermentation and minimal aging.
Lets focus in Washington!
Washington State’s high latitude with the protection of the cascade mountains from rainstorms creates the ideal conditions for Pinot Gris grapes to thrive. The grapes use the abundant sunlight to develop fruit flavors, while the cold nights preserve acidity.
Some notable Pinot Gris regions in Washington State include the Ancient Lakes and Horse Heaven Hills appellations in the Columbia Valley AVA, and Puget Sound in Western Washington like Bainbridge and Whidbey .
Pairings
Pinot Gris pairs well with lighter cuisine, Seafood stew, one of my all time faves is Smoked salmon chowder, chicken piccata, or a simple roasted turkey. I highly recommend it with spicy food, like shrimp a la diabla, salmon tartar, cream-based pasta, and Sopa de lima, (yucatan style lime soup).
Pinot Gris in Washington are best known for its aromas and flavors of peach, pear, grapefruit, and a touch of herbaceousness. Some examples can also have a spiciness, allied to richness and depth in the final product.
